It is a Chrome extension for YouTube. It manages YouTube captions that you can switch on or off. Other sites, mobile browsers and local video files are outside its current scope.

Burned-in subtitles are part of the video image, so YouTube's CC button cannot turn them off. Switchable captions are a separate track. subtitle.im does not edit the video image; it handles the switchable track only when there is enough evidence of burned-in subtitles.

When the setting is on and the current video has an available caption track, the extension can enable it. If YouTube has no track, it does not generate captions or change the video image.

With enough evidence of burned-in subtitles in another language, it follows your choice: close automatically, ask first or keep the switchable captions. Choose keep if you want both languages visible.

It can generally detect most clear, common burned-in subtitles, though misses and false positives can occur. Low resolution, unusual placement or complex lettering can reduce accuracy. When evidence is insufficient it keeps switchable captions; if they are hidden by mistake, undo from the prompt or turn YouTube CC back on.

OCR for burned-in subtitles runs in your browser; video frames are not uploaded. Once available, email verification, licensing, allowance and purchase services will process the information needed for those actions.

Open the Chrome Web Store from our guide. After installing, open a YouTube video to try it free. Until the listing is published, the link goes to the store homepage.

You do not need a separate Google sign-in or website password. To connect an account, use a one-time email link, check the connection code on the website, and confirm the extension connection.

Check the email address, inbox, and spam folder. A one-time link is valid for 15 minutes; you can request another after it expires.

Start the connection in the extension, open the one-time email link, check the code shown by the extension on the website, then confirm. Return to a YouTube video afterward. This flow will open when email and licensing services launch.

Check that YouTube CC has an available, enabled track and review the extension's duplicate-caption setting. Low image quality, subtitle placement or insufficient evidence may make it keep captions. You can detect again on this video or use CC yourself.

Use Undo or Restore in the extension prompt, or turn YouTube CC back on. Restoration affects this viewing only and does not remove burned-in subtitles from the image.

It does not create a persistent video or channel rule. Manual CC takes priority over automatic handling for this viewing only; next time, saved rules and settings apply again.

Pro lets you set channel rules and exceptions for individual videos. Priority is manual CC for this viewing, video rule, channel rule, then global settings. Manual CC and Undo never silently create rules.

Each installation includes 10 different free videos. Only successful caption closures count; detection, failed recognition, manual CC changes and rewatches do not.

It does not reset monthly. The allowance is stored in this extension installation; reinstalling may reset the local record.

Free lets you try core caption handling within its allowance. Pro adds ongoing automatic handling, channel and video rules, and memory of confirmed closures. Annual and one-time Pro have the same features and differ in billing and duration.

If you purchased Pro, verify with the email used for purchase on My License to view or restore access. Restoring access does not reset the free allowance.
